Calvin And Hobbes creator Bill Watterson has released his first published cartoon in eighteen years, and it’s a documentary film poster! The documentary, Stripped, is a described as a “love letter to comic strips,” and includes interviews with such funny page luminaries as Bill Griffith, Richard Thompson and, yes, Bill Watterson.
Most websites publish these lists in December.
The more meticulous sites will wait until January so they don’t miss any eligible entries.
But the lazy writers? The uninspired sites? Those layabout louts lacking any real writing goals and/or an online endgame? They plop one out on the last day of February, secretly seeking solace in the fact that ‘at least they didn’t wait ’til March.’
Um…enjoy? Continue reading
Jeffrey Katzenberg announced yesterday that Rihanna will create a concept album based on DreamWorks’ upcoming animated film, Home.
Katzenberg has been trying to build some sort of pop culture cross-pollination with Rihanna for a while now. Back in October, Radar Online wrote a piece about Katzenberg’s interest in Ri-Ri, quoting a DreamWorks “insider” as saying:
“He sees a huge amount of money to be made there and wants to capitalize before somebody else does. He’s making pop-friendly movies and wants her to be in them.” Continue reading
The long text on Stitch’s adoption certificate actually has nothing to do with information about the actual adoption. It is actually a letter of thanks from the directors (Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois) and producer (Clark Spencer) thanking the entire team for their work on the project.
Click through for an enlarged pic of the text, as well as one more bit of L&S trivia hidden on the adoption certificate… Continue reading
Remember a month or so ago when I risked what little credibility I had defending the pop culture cross-pollination of Ren & Stimpy‘s John Kricfalusi and Miley Cyrus? (Psst — over here.) Well, from the looks of these candy-colored cartoon stills, I was right.

On January 8, the world witnessed the unveiling of The Simpsons House LEGO set.
On Feb. 7, The LEGO Movie was released to critical and financial success, taking in almost $200 million worldwide in its first two weeks.
On May 4, these two tangentially related news items will collide when FOX airs its first episode of The Simpsons done entirely in LEGO! The episode, Brick Like Me, revolves around Homer waking up in a world made of LEGO. He then must “put together” how he got there and how to get home. Sounds fun!
You know that old expression, “If it looks like a fish and swims like a fish, it probably is a fish”? Bill Peet: An Autobiography blows this ol’ axiom all to hell. Here’s how:
It’s written like a children’s book. It’s illustrated like a children’s book. The first 1/4 of the book detailing Peet’s poor, provincial childhood would easily appeal to a child reader.
Francesco Francavilla, the artist who brought us Batman, 1972, has created a cool series of imaginative illustrations depicting your favorite corporate comics characters competing in the Winter Olympics. To see the rest of the set, click here.

Tegan & Sara, The Lonely Island and Devo front-man Mark Mothersbaugh created an insanely infectious pop ditty with Everything Is Awesome, the theme song to The LEGO Movie. Enjoy!
Spider-Man has always had girl troubles. From his first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15 to whatever movie Marvel is releasing this year, the wisecracking web-head has rarely been lucky when it comes to love. Oh, sure, he’s had girlfriends. He’s even been married. But each and every affair inevitably ended in disaster. Death, dumping, a Marvel mandated mind-wipe — the deeper the love, the more messed-up the break-up. But does Spider-Man allow any of that to dim his dream of true love? Hells no. Skip ahead a few issues, and a new gal walks through Spidey’s door (or flies past his window…or punches him in the face while fleeing the scene of a crime…) and his lower half’s spider-sense starts tingling once more. Oh, comics. Ah, l’amour!
Listed below are my five favorite Spider-Man love stories. Some are silly, some are somber. All of ‘em are all-caps ROMANTIC.
It took a little digging (and a helluva lot of YouTube clips), but Skunk has found some short-but-sweet quotes from the voice cast of Pixar’s upcoming animated feature, Inside Out. While the normally outspoken Lewis Black remains mum, Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling, Phyllis Smith and Bill Hader have all gone on the record regarding their characters.

Hot on the heels of our interview with Annie Award-winner Carter Goodrich comes this interview with his fellow Croods crewman and Annie Award-winner, Shane Prigmore. A couple of cool things to look out for in this interview: Prigmore’s anecdote about working on The Iron Giant and the two animal mash-ups that inspired the rest of The Croods‘ critter combos. Enjoy!
Check out this incredible Iron Giant costume by Jason. The Popeye forearms…the riveted chest-plate…the light-up eyes…it’s PERFECT!

Disney has launched a website for their upcoming Broadway adaptation of Frozen. So far, the site is pretty paltry. There’s no art, no info — heck, it doesn’t even use the official Frozen font. So what IS there? A spot to leave your email address for future Frozen updates (and other assorted Disney-related spam). Curious? Click here.

The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia begin today, and with them come three new cartoon mascots: Zaya the doe hare, Bely Mishka the polar bear and Snow Leopard the…well, snow leopard. (Creative!)
The three merchandise-ready mascots were designed and chosen by Russia’s citizens as part of an open-entry contest that netted nearly 24,000 entries. Of course, Russia being Russia, even this seemingly simplistic act of demi-democracy was not without its scandals.
The setting sun silhouetting Hiccup. The flaming sword held high. The cheering viking hordes. Pretty powerful cover, eh?

This endlessly repeating GIF is dedicated to my younger brother, Jared. It’s revenge for a tribute to the way he used to make us watch Inspector Gadget every afternoon, no matter how many times we’d already seen the episode being aired.
Note: This GIF is made from two limited edition silkscreens created by Dave Perillo. To see more of Perillo’s pop culture pop art, click here.
Depending upon your personal kinks, this lycra Totoro bodysuit is either (a.) a nightmarish pairing of Studio Ghibli and American Horror Story or (b.) a super sexy Valentine’s Day gift.

This past weekend, Carter Goodrich was awarded the Annie for ‘Character Design in an Animated Feature Production’ for his work on The Croods. This OFFICIALLY makes Goodrich a certified member of the A-list animation elite. You want to ask him for an autograph? An interview? A couple of bucks? Talk to his people, babe. From this day forth, the closest he’s gonna get to ‘the little people’ like us is a corner table in Club 33.
Lucky for me, before I did this site, I did a Croods-themed blog. And guess who I managed to interview for it? Mr. award-winner himself, Carter Goodrich.
