It took a little digging (and a helluva lot of YouTube clips), but Skunk has found some short-but-sweet quotes from the voice cast of Pixar’s upcoming animated feature, Inside Out. While the normally outspoken Lewis Black remains mum, Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling, Phyllis Smith and Bill Hader have all gone on the record regarding their characters.
Curious? Click through…
Let’s start with Bill Hader. Hader not only gives you the skinny on his character, he briefly describes the basic premise of Inside Out.
Bill Hader: I’m doing a movie called Inside Out. It’s Pete Docter’s new movie. I play Fear, the character of Fear. It’s a movie about […] an adolescent girl who moved to San Francisco, and movie takes place in her mind. Her mind is the setting of the film. And we all play her emotions — me and Mindy Kaling, Amy Poehler, Lewis Black and a bunch of other great people. (Via.)
Amy Poehler: I’m doing a Pixar [movie]! It’s called Inside Out. It’s about a girl whose got, um, all her emotions in her head. […] And I play Joy — the emotion of joy. (Via.)
Mindy Kaling: Cool chick. (Via.)
What? I said at the outset that these quotes were “short but sweet,” didn’t I? Didn’t I??
Anyway, Kaling’s playing ‘Disgust.’ Disgust seems to be of a similarly snotty temperament as the last cartoon character Kaling voiced — Wreck-It Ralph‘s Taffyta Muttonfudge.
Phyllis Smith: I’m one of about five different emotions, and mine is Sadness. I play a lot off of the character…of ‘Joy.’ I’m like her ball and chain. […] Joy has an idea, and I’m the one dragging her down. I’m very happy to be sad! (Via.)
And there you have it — four finite quotes. Maybe it’s all this talk of anthropomorphized emotions, but I can’t help but feel a little sadness and disgust over how paltry this post looks up on the screen. To try and make up for it, I’m gonna go ahead and throw in every other piece of Inside Out art floating around on the net.
Yep. That’s it. Just the one. Seriously, you regular readers should be getting numb to the disappointment at this point.
In closing…
Inside Out is slated for a June 19, 2015 release. It is being directed by Pete Docter (Monsters Inc.) and written by Docter and Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3).
6/12 update! In a Fast Company profile piece titled Inside the Pixar Braintrust, Inside Out director Pete Docter let a few more secrets about the film slip:
Pete Docter: What’s inside the mind? Your emotions-and we’ve worked really hard to make these characters look the way those emotions feel. We have our main character, an emotion called Joy, who is effervescent. She literally glows when she’s excited. Then we have Fear. He thinks of himself as confident and suave, but he’s a little raw nerve and tends to freak out. The other characters are Anger, Sadness-her shape is inspired by teardrops-and Disgust, who basically turns up her nose at everything. And all these guys work at what we call Headquarters.
Another update! Pixar has released the first official plot description. While it sounds pretty much like everything you just read, there are a few new details. What are you waiting for? READ.
Pixar Inc.: Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.
