Is Pixar Making A Musical?

60In a recent interview with the UK radio show Saturday Night At The Movies, frequent Pixar composer Randy Newman was describing the falling out he had with Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich, when he said the following:

“Lee Unkrich had Toy Story 3 temped with my music and it was limiting to me. [...] Now he’s not going to use me to work with him again. He’s doing a musical now.”

For the sake of fueling rumors and creating hysteria, let’s repeat that last line, only this time in boldface and with multiple exclamation marks: “He’s doing a musical now[!!!]“ Continue reading

‘Inside Out’ Trailer #2

My reaction? Not good. This is the first bit of Inside Out promo material that I haven’t loved. Judging from this trailer, it looks like one joke spread super-thin. And the gag about the dad thinking only of sports is bad, just bad. Pixar has proved itself capable of doing so much better than tired cliches. Still, I’m looking forward to it. Joy must be at the controls in my brain!

4 Questions Re: Toy Story 4

00Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced that John Lasseter will be directing Toy Story 4, “a new chapter in the lives of Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the Toy Story gang.”

Parks & Rec alum Rashida Jones, along with her writing partner Will McCormack (Celeste and Jesse Forever), will pen the screenplay. The film is scheduled for release on June 16, 2017.

While I LOVE the original trilogy, I must admit, this news came as a bit of downer to me. Reprinted below are the first four questions that popped out of my mouth when relaying the news to my gal, Mishka. Continue reading

Catmull’s Writing Vs. Pixar’s Reality

0In his recently released book Creativity, Inc.: Overcoming the Unseen Forces That Stand in the Way of True Inspiration, Pixar co-founder Ed Catmull writes:

In a fear-based, failure-averse culture, people will consciously or unconsciously avoid risk. They will seek instead to repeat something safe that’s been good enough in the past. Their work will be derivative, not innovative. But if you can foster a positive understanding of failure, the opposite will happen.

Inspiring words. But do they truly reflect the current climate at Pixar? Continue reading

Pixar, Where ‘It’s All About Story Sequels.’

Monsters U(noriginality): Pixar’s Next Short Is A Spin-Off Of A Sequel

party-central-monsters-university-short-600x336Here’s the first image from Pixar’s next short, Party Central. The look on the characters’ faces pretty much mirrors my own reaction upon seeing this. I mean, seriously, Pixar — ANOTHER freaking franchise pic?

Here’s D23′s description of the spin-off to the sequel to Monsters, Inc.:

Mike and Sulley are back at Monsters University for a fun-filled weekend with their Oozma Kappa fraternity brothers. The gang is throwing their first party, but no one

No one cares. Party Central is being directed by Kelsey Mann (story supervisor on Monsters University). It was initially scheduled to be released with Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur, but with Dinosaur being pushed back to 2015, the powers that be decided to open it in front of Muppets Most Wanted on March 21, 2014.

Hey, all those leftover Monsters U toys won’t sell themselves!

Bad Dinosaur: Dino’s Delay Leads To Layoffs At Pixar

toy_story_3_screenshot_whats_in_the_boxThe Los Angeles Times is reporting that Pixar has laid off “an undisclosed number of people at its Emeryville, Calif., headquarters due to the delay of its forthcoming film The Good Dinosaur.”

While no concrete numbers are available yet, the layoffs are rumored to affect less than 5% of the company’s 1,200 employees.

Animation fans may recall that this past summer, The Good Dinosaur‘s original director, Bob Peterson, was removed from the project. A month later, the film was pushed back from its original release date of May 30, 2014, to Nov. 25, 2015. This delay has left Pixar without a movie for 2014.

In related news, Pixar closed its Vancouver studios last month, laying off approximately 80 employees.

We at Skunk send our deepest condolences to those folks who have lost their jobs.
