Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced that John Lasseter will be directing Toy Story 4, “a new chapter in the lives of Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the Toy Story gang.”
Parks & Rec alum Rashida Jones, along with her writing partner Will McCormack (Celeste and Jesse Forever), will pen the screenplay. The film is scheduled for release on June 16, 2017.
While I LOVE the original trilogy, I must admit, this news came as a bit of downer to me. Reprinted below are the first four questions that popped out of my mouth when relaying the news to my gal, Mishka.
Question 1: Is this really necessary? Toy Story 3 was an unexpected miracle and (arguably) the perfect end to the series.
Question 2: Is Lasseter really the best man for the job? Literally EVERYTHING he has directed since Toy Story 2 (which he was a co-director on) has been AWFUL. Cars, Cars 2, a bunch of those irritating Mater shorts — AWFUL.
Question 3: Where do you think the toys will have to return home from this time around?
Question 4: Andy. Will he be written in as a creepy 20-something who stops by to check on his toys, or simply a front-and-center cameo that they’ll market as a TOP SECRET EASTER EGG?
Honestly, this news should delight me. I should be marking the release date on my iPhone’s calendar instead of moaning about it on the net. So what gives? Am I just old? Ungrateful? Completely lacking faith? How do YOU feel about the news? Please let me know in the comments section!
