Book Review:
Cinderella - A Dream Come True

tumblr_nina67jU5i1ske259o7_1280Cinderella: A Dream Come True may only be 8” tall, but it is PACKED with gorgeous concept art and insightful behind-the-scenes anecdotes.

The first half of the 160-page hardcover is a delightful re-telling of Walt Disney’s Cinderella. What makes this ‘storybook’ section so special are the illustrations. The book uses crystal-clear stills from the film, Mary Blair’s pretty pastel concept art and various pieces of pencil animation and storyboard excerpts to bring the text to life.

A Closer Look At King Candy’s Walk Cycle

tumblr_mhkc6gs7mz1qejutxo1_400“Okay, I don’t normally do this, but let me just say something about [...] the sheer amount of detail they put into [King Candy's] walk-cycle in correlation to the character. [N]otice how his legs go straight out to the sides of him while he twirls his feet - like the wheels of the cars he has been programmed to drive. Not only that, but the lull in his walk is exactly like spinning your tires while breaking (or revving one’s engine), which happens at the start of every cart-racing game. Also, his hand [...] ‘changes gears’ [...] before his shooing gesture, before returning to the unseen ‘gear-shift.’ [King Candy] embodies both his car and racing games in general.” - Noxaldia

Wow! That’s a fascinating theory. Makes sense, too. What do y’all think?

Andreas Deja Recommends:
Ken Hultgren’s ‘The Art Of Animal Drawing’

ad_khOver the years, Andreas Deja has animated quite a few iconic animals. There was the devious Scar, the lovable Tigger and the irrepressible Roger Rabbit. Oh, and who can forget the lower half of King Triton? More recently, Deja has been busily working on a new animal character - Mushka the tiger - for a feature film that he is personally writing, directing and animating.

According to Deja, there is ONE BOOK that made all of these characters possible: The Art of Animal Drawing by Ken Hultgren. Continue reading

Are These Two Penguins Related?

11I just finished reading former Disney story artist Homer Brightman’s autobiography, Life In The Mouse House. It’s an incredibly candid book, full of uncensored anecdotes about the early days at Disney’s — some of ‘em heartbreaking, some of ‘em hilarious.

One thing confused me, though. Towards the end of the book, Brightman is said to have co-created the character Chilly Willy with Paul J. Smith in 1953. The book says that Chilly Willy was inspired by Pablo the Penguin, star of The Three Caballeros‘ short The Cold Blooded Penguin (1944) — a short which Brightman co-directed. Since I’d never heard this before, I went online to try and find out more. Only when I did, the credit for Chilly Willy’s creation goes solely to Smith. Which is correct?

Top 5: Creepiest Walk-Around Characters At Disneyland/Walt Disney World

9We all have a pic or two of ourselves posing with a Disney walk-around character. Maybe you were an adult on your first trip to Walt Disney World, or perhaps you were a child visiting Mickey and Minnie ‘where they live’ at Disneyland. Either way, the experience was a right-of-passage of sorts, and one you felt was worth preserving.

But there’s a second set of pictures hidden away in the scrapbooks and smart phones of some Disney fans. These photos forgo sentimental selfies in favor of the hideous, the nightmarish and the truly terrifying walk-around characters. Listed below are the worst of the worst. Continue reading

Problem, Solution

3When it comes to hipster hobbies, knitting is second only to micro-brewing. When it comes to cartoon-loving kiddies, Frozen is second-to-none. So according to my iffy, imaginary pseudoscience, that makes Drunk Girl Designs‘ ‘Cold as Fuck’ mittens the nexus (nadir?) of 2014′s pop culture trends.

TCM To Sponsor Disney’s ‘The Great Movie Ride’

12Disney’s The Great Movie Ride used to be the centerpiece of their Hollywood Studios theme park. Over the years, though, its popularity has waned in favor of newer, more ‘exciting’ rides like The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and Toy Story Midway Mania. The ultimate low came in 2001 when Disney execs erected a giant Sorcerer’s Hat in front of the ride to sell low-price souvenirs.

Disney and Turner Classic Movies plan to change all that via a new deal wherein TCM will add their name (and a large cash infusion) to the ride. Not only that, but that damned Sorcerer’s Hat is coming down, too!

So how does this tie into animation?

4 Questions Re: Toy Story 4

00Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced that John Lasseter will be directing Toy Story 4, “a new chapter in the lives of Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the Toy Story gang.”

Parks & Rec alum Rashida Jones, along with her writing partner Will McCormack (Celeste and Jesse Forever), will pen the screenplay. The film is scheduled for release on June 16, 2017.

While I LOVE the original trilogy, I must admit, this news came as a bit of downer to me. Reprinted below are the first four questions that popped out of my mouth when relaying the news to my gal, Mishka. Continue reading

Chris Sanders On ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow’

qwwa5a0m“Everything about The Legend of Sleepy Hollow I consider to be perfect. The fall colors, the narration by Bing Crosby, the disarmingly cute opening and the scary end. Brom Bones’ song at the Van Tassels’ Halloween party always make me feel like I was there amongst the frightened guests. And the execution of Ichabod’s final, lonely ride through the deep woods and hidden graveyards of his township is a masterpiece of tension, humor, and sudden terror.”

Director Chris Sanders (Lilo & Stitch, The Croods) discusses his love for Walt Disney’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and its female lead, Katrina Van Tassel.

Lilo & Stitch Vs. Racist Tourists

This deleted scene from Lilo & Stitch has always impressed me with its attempt to address the casual racism and rudeness often displayed by tourists to Hawaii. But it wasn’t until I was watching this scene again this morning that I noticed another amazing thing about it:

The film’s directors cast themselves as two of the rude racists! Continue reading

Disney Prepping ‘Enchanted 2’

0Disney has hired J. David Stem and David N. Weiss to write a screenplay for Enchanted 2. Animation fans may know Stern and Weiss from their work on The Smurfs movie and Shrek 2. (Then again, maybe not.) Anne Fletcher (The Proposal) is set to direct.

Animation maestro James Baxter handled the hand-drawn cartooning in the first film, but Baxter now works for DreamWorks, so it’ll be interesting to see who they go with this time around…

Disney Is After ‘The One and Only Ivan’

501Disney is in negotiations to buy the rights to Katherine Applegate and Patricia Castelao’s Newbery Medal-winning children’s book, The One and Only Ivan. The book is about a silverback gorilla (Ivan) and a baby elephant (Stella) who hatch a plan to escape from their cages — cages located in the middle of a shopping mall! Making this story all the more marvelous, it’s based on actual events. Well, loosely based. Very loosely.
