Lou Ferrigno Will Voice The Hulk In ‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’
In the first Avengers movie, the Hulk spoke only one line of dialogue: “Puny God.” That line was provided by actor Mark Ruffalo. But did you know that all of the other grunts and roars were made by the original TV Hulk, Lou Ferrigno?
S’true!
What’s more, while at WonderCon, Ferrigno told Nuke The Fridge that he will be doing the voice-over work for the Hulk in Avengers: Age Of Ultron (May 1, 2015). How cool is that?

‘Stand By Me, Doraemon’ Trailer Premiers, Prompting Skunk To Lament The Amazing Advances In CG And Stop-Motion Animation
The trailer for Takashi Yamazaki’s 3D CG Stand By Me, Doraemon is cute, whimsical and quickly forgettable. But maybe that’s just because I don’t speak Japanese. Maybe when the American trailer comes out and it features an English-language cast comprised of SNL alumni and Disney Channel cast-offs it will leave a more lasting impression. Continue reading
HBO’s ‘Monster’ Is Getting Stronger
We’ve known for a while now that Guillermo del Toro is directing the pilot for a live-action HBO series based on Naoki Urasawa’s amazing manga, Monster. Pretty cool, right? Well, it gets better. Crazy hunter recently revealed that producer Stephen Thompson (Doctor Who and Sherlock) is writing the pilot!
This is like one of those heist movies where they hire the best thieves from around the globe to pull off some incredible caper. Only, instead of thieves it’s geeks, and instead of a caper it’s a TV series about a fugitive brain surgeon’s hunt for the ruthless killer whose life he once saved. So yeah, same thing.
The Falcon Wants A Wonder Woman Movie
“There should be a Wonder Woman movie. I don’t care if they make 20 bucks, if there’s a movie you’re gonna lose money on, make it Wonder Woman. You know what I mean, ’cause little girls deserve that.”
- Anthony Mackie (a.k.a. The Falcon in Captain America: Winter Soldier) in an interview with Geek Dad.

Animation’s Newest Philosophical Debate
The wily wizards at DBLG Animation made a stop-motion film using figures created in CG and printed — frame by frame — on a 3D printer.
This begs the question: Is this CG animation, stop-motion animation…or both?
Many thanks to pinball1998 for the tip!

Like I Needed ANOTHER Reason To Buy Ice Cream
Häagen-Dazs has teamed up with digital design firm Jam3 to bring you the enchanting app Concerto Timer. After downloading the app, simply hold your smartphone up to a pint of Häagen-Dazs, and a hologram of a classical musician appears, complete with classical score! Even cooler? Each flavor displays a different musician!
While the official product pitch describes Concerto Timer as a timer for perfect ice cream softness, it’s really just a cool party trick and a clever example of animation being used in modern marketing. The Concerto Timer app is free and available here.

‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’ - Trailer 3
Looks like DreamWorks and director Dean DeBlois are going epic with How to Train Your Dragon 2.
If DeBlois can pull this trilogy off — and after seeing his work in Lilo & Stitch and the original HTTYD, I have faith that he can — Dragons could become the new face of DreamWorks. I don’t know about you, but I think it’s high time DW became famous for something other than Shrek.
Disney Is After ‘The One and Only Ivan’
Disney is in negotiations to buy the rights to Katherine Applegate and Patricia Castelao’s Newbery Medal-winning children’s book, The One and Only Ivan. The book is about a silverback gorilla (Ivan) and a baby elephant (Stella) who hatch a plan to escape from their cages — cages located in the middle of a shopping mall! Making this story all the more marvelous, it’s based on actual events. Well, loosely based. Very loosely.
This Is Supposed To Be Terrifying, Right?

Disney, YEEEAAAH!!!
In a tweet dated March 23, comedian T.J. Miller announced that he will be voicing the character of Fred — a.k.a. Fredzilla — in Disney’s upcoming animated Marvel film, Big Hero 6.
For those of you not versed in the brief history of Marvel’s Big Hero 6 (roughly two dozen issues), Fred is a “quirky, weird, wannabe filmmaker…who may or may not be some sort of dragon.”
Animation fans may recognize Miller from his pitch-perfect voicing of How to Train Your Dragon‘s Tuffnut and Gravity Falls‘ sarcastic goth, Robbie. Comedy fans know Miller as a brilliant stand-up and the loudest, most energetic podcast guest EVER. (Apologies to Pete Holmes.)
Big Hero 6 hits U.S. theaters on Nov. 7, 2014.

Walt Disney Animation and Marvel Comics’ Big Hero 6 arrives in theaters on November 7. According to the official WDA sales pitch, the CG animated film is “an action comedy adventure about Hiro Hamada, a brilliant robotics prodigy who finds himself in the grips of a criminal plot that threatens to destroy the fast-paced, high-tech city of San Fransokyo. With the help of his closest companion — a robot named Baymax — Hiro joins forces with a reluctant team of first-time crime fighters on a mission to save their city.”

Coming Soon: 3 New Tartakovsky ‘Toons
Sony Pictures Animation has announced THREE new Genndy Tartakovsky cartoons — Hotel Transylvania 2 (co-written by TV Funhouse‘s Robert Smigel), a CG Popeye (insert exaggerated groan here), and Genndy Tartakovsky’s Can You Imagine? (pictured above, and described as “a fantastic journey through one boy’s imagination”).
Me, personally? I think Tartakovsky is amazing. His early animated take on The Clone Wars (vol. 1 & 2) remains my third favorite Star Wars release (after the first two films). His Samurai Jack is another bit of brilliance, pairing great writing with even better visuals.
That said, I wasn’t wild about Hotel Transylvania. I liked it, but I didn’t love it. And is it just me, or does the description of Can You Imagine? sound a lot like Pixar’s upcoming Inside Out? Here’s hoping the input of Smigel and the deep pockets of Sony will provide Tartakovsky with everything he needs to make a string of stellar flicks.
Bill Peet: From The Circus Tent To The Silver Screen
As a young boy, Disney story artist Bill Peet used to spend hours at the circus, drawing everything he could.
“I did have hopes of doing something with it. In those days, my secret ambition was to be an illustrator of animal stories.”
When Peet began his career at Walt Disney Studios in 1937, he felt his “secret ambition” had been achieved. Unfortunately, this feeling didn’t last long. Peet quickly discovered that animating and illustrating were two VERY different disciplines.
Finally! An English Language Trailer For ‘Jack & The Cuckoo-Clock Heart’

Tantalizing Trailer: The Boxtrolls
The stop-motion films of Laika just seem to be getting better and better. First there was quirky, captivating Coraline. Then the spooky, silly ParaNorman. Now Laika’s dropped a tantalizing trailer for their next pic, The Boxtrolls. I’m really digging the film’s grimy, grotesque, European arthouse aesthetic. It kinda reminds me of a stop-motion City of Lost Children!
The Boxtrolls hits U.S. theaters 9/26.
War of the Worlds: Goliath
Directed by Joe Pearson (Rocko’s Modern Life, Phineas and Ferb) and starring Adam Baldwin (Firefly), War of the Worlds: Goliath is set 15 years after the events of H.G. Wells classic, The War of the Worlds, and tells the tale of the Martians inevitable return.
The film is a gripping, grandiose, alien invasion extravaganza, beautifully realized via a surprisingly seamless blend of CG and hand-drawn animation. Yes, HAND-DRAWN ANIMATION. Lots of it!
I got to interview writer/director Joe Pearson last week for Animation Scoop. Pearson not only shared a bit of the back-story for War of the Worlds: Goliath, he also detailed his long and illustrious career in the animation industry, as well as his path for breaking into the biz.

Rihanna Recording Album For DW’s ‘Home’
Jeffrey Katzenberg announced yesterday that Rihanna will create a concept album based on DreamWorks’ upcoming animated film, Home.
Katzenberg has been trying to build some sort of pop culture cross-pollination with Rihanna for a while now. Back in October, Radar Online wrote a piece about Katzenberg’s interest in Ri-Ri, quoting a DreamWorks “insider” as saying:

On May 4, these two tangentially related news items will collide when FOX airs its first episode of The Simpsons done entirely in LEGO! The episode, Brick Like Me, revolves around Homer waking up in a world made of LEGO. He then must “put together” how he got there and how to get home. Sounds fun!

Now that Frozen has been certified a financial, critical and popular success, it’s time to take a look at the next Disney animated feature to feature a princess in the lead — Ron Clements and Jon Musker’s Moana. Steven Spielberg Suggests Bigger, Better Ending For ‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’
Steven Spielberg is once again acting as the unofficial adviser to the How to Train Your Dragon franchise. An email posted yesterday on Icelaniceel.tumblr reports:
Steven Spielberg was [at DreamWorks] last Wednesday to give notes on How to Train Your Dragon 2. He liked the first Dragons a lot, and one of his kids is really crazy about the original. Steven’s been involved with the new movie for a while, he’s seen it three times.
Everybody thinks we’ve got a terrific film, but the third act needs to be a little bigger, have a bigger climax and a larger celebration at the end. We’re supposed to get a meeting about Steven’s notes tomorrow or the next day…
Fans of the original HTTYD may remember that Spielberg was an early, outspoken supporter of the film. He was also responsible for one of the most touching moments in the movie. In the DVD commentary, HTTYD‘s co-director Dean DeBlois recalled:
‘Me And My Shadow’ Pencil Test Surfaces
DreamWorks animator William Salazar posted a pencil test he did for the studio’s long-delayed/probably cancelled film, Me and My Shadow.
Watching this brief bit of loose-limbed lunacy makes me pine for what could’ve been. Adding to my list of laments, Me and My Shadow was to be a Paperman-esque blend of CG and hand-drawn animation — heavy on the hand-drawn!
Me and My Shadow was intended as the feature film directing debut of How to Train Your Dragon 2‘s head of story, Alessandro Carloni. The film was initially scheduled to be released in 2013, then 2014, and has since been removed from DW’s official 2014-2016 release schedule. Bummer, huh?

In a recent press conference, Miley Cyrus announced that she has hired Ren & Stimpy creator John Kricfalusi to help design the visuals for her upcoming Bangerz tour.

“His art is driving a lot of the tour,” Cyrus explained.
Bakshi Is Back!
Via The TAG Blog, quoting huge chunks from The Jewish Daily Forward:
… There hasn’t been much recent news from [Ralph] Bakshi, … but with “Last Days of Coney Island” he’s making a return to filmmaking, and to subjects that have marked his career since the beginning: crime, corruption, and the grime-ridden streets of New York. …
The decline of Coney Island was a local tragedy, but it wasn’t just the beach that was in trouble. As Bakshi tells it, the fate of the neighborhood was a metaphor for everything happening in America, including the assassinations of Kennedy and King. “Coney Island was a place where poor people could go and not feel poor,” he said. “You wouldn’t run into any Rolls Royces, and you didn’t feel that there was anything that you could not afford to do. But it ended up trashed, and I felt that America was headed the same way. Continue reading

The Simpsons Go Ghibli!
The Simpsons has been around so long that it’s kinda hard to get too excited by it anymore. That said, when the show does wow, it’s an all-caps WOW.
This strange and surreal homage to Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli is one such WOW. While I’ve no doubt that it is entirely unnecessary to the plot of whatever episode it airs in, that only makes me adore it all the more. Such tangents and tributes are a gift, and the most memorable gifts are rarely the stuff of logic, but of love.

Monsters U(noriginality): Pixar’s Next Short Is A Spin-Off Of A Sequel
Here’s the first image from Pixar’s next short, Party Central. The look on the characters’ faces pretty much mirrors my own reaction upon seeing this. I mean, seriously, Pixar — ANOTHER freaking franchise pic?

Mike and Sulley are back at Monsters University for a fun-filled weekend with their Oozma Kappa fraternity brothers. The gang is throwing their first party, but no one—
No one cares. Party Central is being directed by Kelsey Mann (story supervisor on Monsters University). It was initially scheduled to be released with Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur, but with Dinosaur being pushed back to 2015, the powers that be decided to open it in front of Muppets Most Wanted on March 21, 2014.

1st Look: Jack & the Cuckoo-Clock Heart
Jack & the Cuckoo-Clock Heart is Stéphane Berla and Mathias Malzieu’s stop-motion adaptation of Malzieu’s fantasy/romance novel, La Mécanique du Cœur. The story revolves around Jack, a young man born in 1870s Scotland on ‘the coldest day ever.’ Because of the extreme cold, Jack’s heart stops beating. An attending midwife saves him by replacing his heart with a cuckoo-clock, only this has an unintended side effect: Jack must never get angry or excited, or the clock will stop working. As he grows up, Jack realizes that he also cannot risk falling in love, because that too could stop his fragile, clockwork heart. Très tragique! Très Enchanté!
